Meet the ATO’s Hitman - SFCT: The Serious Financial Crime Taskforce

From GST refund fraud to gold-bullion scams — the SFCT has been busy cleaning up the shadows of the tax system.

The Serious Financial Crime Taskforce (SFCT) is the ATO’s elite enforcement squad - a joint operation with the AFP, AUSTRAC, ASIC, and other federal agencies that steps in when “tax issues” turn into criminal investigations.

They don’t chase sloppy bookkeeping, they go after deliberate, structured fraud. And right now, their sights are locked on:

  • GST refund fraud – related-party structures and fake invoicing to claim refunds never earned.

  • False invoicing – claiming GST credits or deductions on paper-only transactions.

  • Electronic Sales Suppression Tools (ESSTs) – systems that wipe or alter sales data.

  • Precious metals fraud – manipulating GST rules around bullion and refining.

When the SFCT gets involved, it’s not about amending returns, it’s about explaining them in court. Their powers extend across agencies, with potential criminal charges, asset seizures, and public naming.

For accountants and advisers, this is the moment to double-check: If a client’s structure feels “too clever,” it might just be too illegal.
